Designations

A designation is a job title (for example Team Lead, Senior Developer, HR Manager). You assign a designation to each employee, and you can arrange designations into a hierarchy that mirrors your reporting structure. This article covers creating designations and using the hierarchy view.

Where to find itSidebarHRDesignation (/designations).

Permission note: Viewing designations requires the View Designation permission; adding or editing them requires the Add Designation / Edit Designation permissions.

Creating a designation

How to add a designation

  1. Go to HR → Designation and click Add Designation.
  2. Enter the details (below) and save.
Field Required Notes
Name Yes The job title, e.g. Team Lead.
Parent No The designation this one reports into, establishing the hierarchy. Leave as -- for a top-level designation.

Designations created here become available in the Designation dropdown when you add or edit employees.

The designation list

The list shows each designation's Name and its Parent Designation. You can:

  • Click a name to view its details.
  • Edit or Delete a designation.
  • Filter by Status (All / Active / Inactive) or search.
  • Use Quick Actions for bulk operations.

A toggle in the top-right switches between this table list and the Hierarchy view.

Hierarchy view

The Hierarchy view renders your designations as an interactive org tree / organization chart. You can:

  • See how designations nest under one another at a glance.
  • Drag and drop a designation onto another to change its parent (re-parent it).
  • Add a new designation directly from here.

This is the quickest way to reorganise titles after a restructure.

Tips

  • Keep designation names consistent (e.g. always Senior X, not a mix of Sr. and Senior) so reports stay tidy.
  • Use the Parent field (or drag-and-drop in the hierarchy) to reflect who reports to whom by title.
  • Designations and Departments are separate: a designation is the title, a department is the team. See Departments.
