Break types

Break types are the categories of break your employees can take — for example Lunch, Tea Break or Prayer. Each type can have its own time limit, colour, and whether it's paid. Employees pick a break type when they start a break, and the choice drives the colour-coding and over-limit warnings throughout the Break Log and reports.

Where to find itBreaksBreak Types

Permission: Viewing this page requires View Break Type set to All. Adding, editing and deleting each need their own permissions (Add / Edit / Delete Break Type), all of which use All.

Adding a break type

  1. Go to BreaksBreak Types.
  2. Click Add Break Type. A panel opens.
  3. Fill in the fields (below) and click Save.

Fields

Field What it does Notes
Break Name The label employees see (e.g. Lunch, Tea Break, Prayer). Required.
Time Limit Maximum minutes allowed for this break. Optional — leave empty for no limit. If entered, must be 1–1440 minutes. Breaks that run longer are flagged as over limit.
Paid Whether this break is paid (Yes) or unpaid (No). Defaults to No.
Colour A colour used for this type's dot/badge across the break log and reports. Defaults to a blue (#1d82f5).
Status Active types appear in the employee's "Take a Break" dropdown; Inactive types are hidden from new breaks. Defaults to Active.

Tip: Set a Time Limit on breaks you want to keep short (like a tea break). Leave it empty for open-ended breaks. Over-limit breaks show in red in the Break Log and are counted on the reporting dashboard.

The break types list

The list shows each type with:

Column Meaning
# Row number.
Break Name The name, with its colour dot.
Time Limit The allowed minutes, or No limit.
Paid A Yes / No badge.
Status An Active / Inactive badge.
Action Edit and delete options (permission-dependent).

You can search the list by break name.

Editing a break type

  1. Open the row's action menu and choose Edit.
  2. Change any field and click Save.

Changes apply to new breaks going forward; existing logged breaks keep the details they were recorded with.

Permission: Editing requires Edit Break Type set to All.

Deleting a break type

  1. Open the row's action menu and choose Delete.
  2. Confirm in the dialog.

Permission: Deleting requires Delete Break Type set to All.

Note: If you no longer want a break type offered but want to keep its history clean, consider setting its Status to Inactive instead of deleting it — inactive types stop appearing in the employee "Take a Break" dropdown.

How break types reach employees

Only Active break types appear in the Take a Break dialog on the employee dashboard, listed by name with their time limit (if set). If no active break types exist, employees see a message asking them to contact their administrator — so set up at least one before expecting staff to log breaks. See Break log for how employees start and end breaks.
