Objectives

An objective is a goal you want to achieve in a set period. Each objective holds one or more key results — the measurable targets that prove you reached it — and progress is kept current through regular check-ins. This article covers creating objectives, adding key results, logging check-ins, how statuses are worked out, and who can see what.

Where to find itPerformance > Objective (/account/objectives).

Permission: Whether you can create, view or manage an objective is governed by its goal type (Individual, Department or Company). In general, admins, the objective's creator and its owners can manage it; reporting managers and specific roles can be granted view or manage rights per goal type by an admin under Settings.

The objectives list

The list shows every objective you're allowed to see, with its owners, goal type, department, status and key results. Across the top you can:

  • Filter by a date range, Department, Project, Owner and Status.
  • Search by objective title.
  • Click Add Objective to create a new one.

The Status filter includes On Track, At Risk, Off Track, Completed, and Incomplete (everything that isn't completed). By default the list hides completed objectives so you focus on live work.

Creating an objective

  1. Click Add Objective.
  2. Fill in the form (fields below).
  3. Save. The objective starts at 0% progress with an On Track status, ready for you to add key results.
Field Required Notes
Objective Title Yes A clear, outcome-focused name.
Description Yes What the objective means and why it matters (rich text).
Goal Type Yes Individual, Department or Company. This also decides who can view/manage the objective.
Department Conditional Shown and used only when the goal type is Department.
Start Date Yes Defaults to today.
End Date Yes The deadline. Used to calculate how much time is left.
Priority Yes Low, Medium or High.
Check-in Frequency Yes How often owners update progress: Daily, Weekly, Bi-weekly, Monthly, Quarterly.
Check-in Day Conditional Shown for Weekly / Bi-weekly — the day of the week check-ins fall on.
Check-in Date Conditional Shown for Monthly / Quarterly — the day of the month check-ins fall on.
Send check-in reminder No When on, owners get a reminder notification on each scheduled check-in day.
Project No Optionally tie the objective to a project.
Owners (Assignee) Yes One or more employees who own the objective and log its check-ins.

Tip: Set the end date realistically — BusinessHRM compares progress against the time remaining to decide whether an objective is On Track, At Risk or Off Track.

Key results

A key result is a single measurable target under an objective. An objective's progress is the average of its key results' progress, so most objectives have two to four key results.

Adding a key result

From an objective, click to add a key result and complete:

Field Required Notes
Objective Yes The parent objective. Pre-filled when you add the key result from within the objective.
Key Result Title Yes What you're measuring.
Description No Extra detail.
Metrics Yes The unit of measure — by default Percentage, Revenue or Units. Admins can add more under Settings. The metric is a label; the value itself is always a number.
Current value Yes Where you are today (the starting point).
Target value Yes Where you want to be.

How key-result progress is measured

Progress is measured from the starting (current) value toward the target, not from zero:

  • If current equals target → 100%.
  • For an increasing target (e.g. 100 → 500), progress is how far you've moved from the start toward the target.
  • For a decreasing target (e.g. reduce 50 → 10), progress is how far you've come down toward the target.
  • Overshooting the target is capped at 100%.

A new key result starts at 0% until a check-in moves its value (unless current already equals target, in which case it's 100%).

Note: Once you start logging check-ins, the key result's current value is driven by the latest check-in — you update progress through check-ins, not by editing the key result directly.

Logging check-ins

A check-in is a periodic progress update on one key result. It's how progress, and the objective's status, stay current.

How to log a check-in

  1. Open the key result and start a check-in.
  2. Complete the fields below and save.
Field Required Notes
Key Result Yes Pre-filled when you start from a key result.
Current value Yes The new value as of this check-in. Defaults to the latest value.
Progress Update No A short narrative of what happened.
Barriers No Anything blocking progress.
Confidence Level Yes Your gut feel — Low, Medium or High.
Check-in date Yes Defaults to today; cannot be a future date.
Time No The time of the check-in.

When you save, BusinessHRM updates the key result's current value, recalculates its progress, schedules the next check-in based on the objective's frequency, and rolls everything up into the objective's overall progress and status.

Important: The Confidence Level is recorded for context only. It does not affect whether the objective shows as On Track, At Risk or Off Track — that is calculated from actual progress and time remaining (see below).

Objective status

BusinessHRM automatically assigns each objective one of four statuses based on its progress (the average of its key results, 0–100%) and how much time is left until the end date.

Status Colour Roughly means
Completed Blue Progress has reached 100%.
On Track Green Progress is high (above ~70%) with comfortable time remaining — meeting key results on schedule.
At Risk Yellow Still reasonably high progress but past the halfway point in time — slipping, can still recover with action.
Off Track Red Stalled, low progress, or past the end date without finishing — significantly behind.

Tip: If an objective drifts to At Risk or Off Track, that's the cue to add it to a 1:1 meeting agenda and agree on action items.

Editing, deleting and access

  • Edit / Delete an objective from the list if you have manage access for its goal type. Deleting an objective also removes its key results and their check-ins.
  • Who can view or manage an objective is set per goal type by an admin (the owner, the owner's reporting manager, and/or chosen roles). Admins and the creator always have access.
