Priorities, Dependencies, and Private Tasks

These three settings shape how a task is prioritised, sequenced, and who can see it. All of them are set on the Create a task form (and can be changed by editing the task).

Priority

Priority tells the team how important a task is. There are three levels:

Priority Typical use
High Needs attention first.
Medium Normal work (the default for new tasks).
Low Can wait.

Set priority in the Other Details section of the task form. Priority is also a filter on the List and Board views, so you can quickly find all High-priority work.

Dependencies (Dependent Task)

A dependency links a task to another task it relies on.

How to set a dependency

  1. Open or create the task and expand Other Details.
  2. Tick Dependent.
  3. In Dependent Task, choose the task this one depends on. The list shows incomplete tasks (that have due dates) in the same project.
  4. Save.

How dependencies behave

  • The dependent task you choose must be due on or before the current task. If its due date is later, the save is rejected. This keeps work in a sensible order — a task cannot be due before the task it depends on.
  • Dependencies are drawn as link lines on the project's Gantt chart, so you can see the chain of work visually.

Private tasks

A private task is restricted so that only people involved with it can see it.

How to make a task private

  1. Open or create the task and expand Other Details.
  2. Tick Make Private.
  3. Save.

Private tasks are hidden from users who are not involved, in addition to the normal view-task permissions.

Permissions

  • Setting priority, dependency, and private status is part of creating or editing a task, governed by your add tasks / edit tasks permission.

Tips

  • Set dependencies within a single project — the dependent-task list is scoped to the task's project.
  • Use Make Private for sensitive work (for example HR or internal matters) so it does not appear on shared boards.
  • Filter the board by Priority = High for a quick triage of what needs doing now.
