Departments
A department is a team or group within your company (for example Human Resources, Engineering, Sales). You assign employees to departments, use them to target holidays and shift assignments, and arrange them into a hierarchy. This article covers creating departments and using the hierarchy view.
Permission note: Viewing departments requires the View Department permission; adding them requires the Add Department permission.
Creating a department
How to add a department
- Go to HR → Department and click Add Department.
- Enter the details (below) and save.
| Field | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Name | Yes | The department/team name, e.g. Human Resource. |
| Parent | No | The department this one sits under, establishing the hierarchy. Leave as -- for a top-level department. |
Departments created here become available in the Department dropdown when you add or edit employees, and as targeting options for holidays, leave types and shift assignment.
The department list
The list shows each department's Name and its Parent Department. You can:
- Edit or Delete a department.
- View the members of a department.
- Search the list.
- Use Quick Actions for bulk operations.
A toggle in the top-right switches between this table list and the Hierarchy view.
Hierarchy view
The Hierarchy view renders your departments as an interactive org tree / organization chart, where you can:
- See how teams nest under one another.
- Drag and drop a department onto another to change its parent.
This makes it easy to keep your team structure up to date after reorganisations.
Tips
- Use departments to drive targeting elsewhere: many features (holidays, leave-type applicability, bulk shift assignment) let you filter by department.
- Keep the Department (team) separate in your mind from Designation (title). See Designations.
- Set a sensible Parent structure so the hierarchy chart reflects your real org.
